Sammy D. Eagle is the official mascot of the University of Mary Washington. Filled with school spirit, Sammy is always ready to soar through his Homecoming high jinks, social media savvy skills, silly dance moves, and so much more. Sammy has been supporting Division III athletes and attending university-wide events since becoming Mary Washington’s official mascot in fall of 1986. That’s lots of Homecomings and Reunion Weekends, lots of pumping up crowds and posing for pictures, lots of hugs and high-fives. So settle in, and get to know our good friend Sammy!
Q:What is your favorite Mary Washington tradition?
A: Homecoming! I love soaring around with my new and old friends and welcoming generations of proud Eagles back to the nest. the best part though, is getting to cheer on all of my athlete friends- have you seen how fast those Soccer girls are? They fly by!
Q: What is your greatest strength?
A: Well, I have only been able to get to the gym a few times this semester, but I’m obviously good at hyping up crowds through my sweet dance skills. I’ve also been told quite a bit, that I am a really great wing-man.
Q:What is your favorite part about being UMW’s mascot?
A: Supporting Division III athletes and the entire UMW community, and spreading my infectious Eagle spirit through campus. See you at the Battleground!
Q:What do you like to do in your free time?
A: If I’m not at an athletic or campus event, I love hanging out downtown or with some pals at the river. I’m not much of a swimmer, but I love watching my friends splash around from a bird’s-eye-view.
Q: Are you a Devil or a Goat?
A: That’s silly, I’m an eagle.
Q: What advice do you give to incoming Freshmen?
A: Just wing it, make sure to get involved and always give me a high five when you see me around. Your Freshman year is full of a lot of firsts- just jump out of the nest, spread your wings, and in no time you’ll be soaring into your Sophomore year with your good pal Sammy.
